"Hus" Chapel

On the slope beyond the bridge to the left of the road leading to Písek and Prague stands the pillared niched chapel of John of Nepomuk. Even though the chapel officially belongs to the cadastral area of Řepice, it is practically part of Strakonice. This tiny structure is interesting chiefly for its history rather than its architecture. Like most Baroque chapels it has been consecrated in the name of Czech patron saint John of Nepomuk, whose statuette can be found in the niche. Instead of the usual cross there is a hammered chalice on a stone base.
This symbol is purely Catholic, but in the Czech context it gains a completely different meaning - Hussite ideas, requesting in their times both kinds of communion, i.e. also from the chalice. A unanimous decision was taken in 1923 to place a painting of John Hus in the chapel. The structure was repaired, the statuette of St. John removed and the Hus painting installed. Scores of people come in procession every year on the anniversary of Hus's death. Many things have changed since then, however, and there is no memorial to either John: of Nepomuk or Hus in the small chapel. The niche is empty, and the chapel has been almost forgotten in its position under the railway embankment of the Písek line.
