Remnants of the Town Walls

The grand prior Jan of Rožmberk (1484-1532) was the first master of the town. Semi-circular stone walls were built in the north during his reign and were reinforced by a moat. The town was entered from the east through Prague Gate and from the west through Horažďovice Gate. In the middle of the northern wall there used to be a small door – "fortna", today commemorated by the Fortna shopping centre in Na Stráži Street. The town battlements were reinforced by a number of bastions; remnants of one of them can be found near Renner Gardens.
