Josef Formánek
Musician, teacher In the second half of the 19th century, he became one of the most significant personalities of musical life in Strakonice. He had been interested in bagpiping since he was twelve, predominantly playing violin. He attained more extensive musical education at the Teacher's institute in České Budějovice. After graduating, he had been active in Klatovy and later went on to become the schoolmaster of the municipal school in Strakonice. Soon after, he also made his mark as an organist, choirmaster and conductor of the musical and educational club Zvon. He loved chamber music and became the first violinist of the local string quartet. He composed small orchestral and choir compositions, publishing the manual for polyphonic zither playing at his own expense. He would collect folk songs and adopt the bagpipe playing style in Strakonice and its nearest surroundings.
