Chapel of St. Peter at Podskalí

The farmstead of the Kučera family in Virt had a niche in the wall with the statue of St. Peter. When they moved out of Virt, they loaded the statue together with the furniture. As they were descending onto the local road, the wagon turned over, and the furniture and the statue were taken by the river stream. They saved the furniture, but the statue was carried all the way to the Podskalí river bank. When the water receded, fishermen found it. According to ancient law what the water carries away shall become the property of the finder. At that time Podskalí was the property of Doctor Lérach, who maintained the statue and had a small chapel built on the hill opposite the place where St. Peter was found.
A major pilgrimage took place here every year. Podskalí was acquired by the municipality in 1939 and the Renner Beautification Club was assigned to maintain the place.
